........Top
Charoen Optical and the Thai Red Cross Children's Home continue their
"Spectacles for Children" project for the fourth year, in
line with H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's initiative, as the
incumbent chair of the Thai Red Cross Children Home, to extend help
to children with eyesight problems in remote areas so that they can
lead a normal life and learn more efficiently. The project includes
on-site free eyesight test and new spectacles fitting by a team of experienced
optometrists and advance equipment for a whole decade, from 2014 to
2023. This year's highlight is the two-fold happiness, as the children
will receive both glasses and special gifts on the occasion of Children's
Day. Everyone is invited to make donations to contribute to this project,
which will be joined by celebrities such as Mario Maurer, Kob Suwanan
and Nada Punnada Punnakanta, at CentralWorld.

........Mr. Noppasak Treeponchaisak, Managing Director of Top Charoen Optical, said, "H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, The Thai Red Cross Children Home's Board of Directors, recognizes the problems of needy people in remote areas, and the importance of efficient education, particularly among children who are the future of the country. ........"Since the project was initiated in 2014, we have offered free eyesight test and new spectacles fitting service, using advance equipment and a team of experienced optometrists, on a monthly basis. On each visit, more than 500 children are included. For children with eyesight problems that cannot be treated with wearing glasses, we will pass them on to receive free treatments at Top Charoen Eye Center. So far, our project has helped 15,000 children. By 2023, we expect to have helped 35,000 children throughout Thailand," said Mr. Noppasak. | |

........Assoc.
Prof. Nuanchan Prabpan, M.D., Director and Secretary-General of the Thai
Red Cross Children's Home, said, "With advanced technology today,
more and more children in the digital age have eyesight problems. The
major role of the Thai Red Cross Children's Home is to assist children
and orphans by educating, training and offering health services to them.
We see the importance of eye health and vision. Meanwhile, Top Charoen
Optical offers its support in the Spectacles for Children project, so
together we are able to offer assistance to children with eyesight problems
in remote areas nationwide. We will extend our project period to 10 years,
from 2014 to 2023, so we are able to help more children and thereby improve
the lives of Thai people and the future of our country." ........Dr. Noppawut Treeponchaisak, Director of Top Charoen Eye Center, said, "The most common sight problems among Thai children between 5-18 years old include pseudomyopia (accommodative spasm), lazy eye (amblyopia), and squint (strabismus). Pseudomyopia in particular, is increasingly common, because today our eyes are fixed on smartphones and other devices for a long time. We also use these devices in dim places, so our eyes have to work harder and contract the whole time. Lazy eye is common in pre-school children. If you are parents, you can notice how your child looks at things around him, or you can close one eye at a time and check if he can see equally with both eyes. If you notice problems, take your child to see an ophthalmologist. Lazy eye can effect brain development. Without sight stimulation, the brain on that side does not develop as much as it should, and it can lead to strabismus in the long run. |

........"Squint
could be caused by genetic, accident at the eye or brain, and the child's
behavior, such as reading while lying down. These children have poor
depth and distance judgments, and this can affect their self-confidence
and socializing skills when they grow up. Strabismus can be manifest
as persistent or latent type. Have the eyesight test by an ophthalmologist
to determine which type of strabismus is affecting your child, which
eye muscle is the cause, how severe the problem is, and whether there
are other problems involved. Usually, the ophthalmologist would treat
the cause of strabismus before operating the eye to correct the vision.
........"They say health is wealth, so I would like Thai children to see the awareness of taking care of their eyes. Today, the world has changed significantly, and there are many new devices like smartphones, tablets and computers to make learning easier. However, spending too much time on those devices can be bad for you," said Dr. Noppawut. |
