The Slowing Down of the Spread of MERS in Korea
(Importance of Tourism between Korea and Thailand)

........Due to the spread of MERS in the Republic of Korea, the number of Thai people to visit Korea has been declining. It is understandable for Thai people to have a concern about visiting Korea, but it is not desirable for them to have an excessive fears based on mis-understanding or rumors on the current situation of MERS in Korea. The WHO statement on MERS in Koreadated on 17 June 2105, and Korean government's strong actions and decling numbe of the infection cases will be very helpful to understand the current situation of MERS in Korea.
WHO statement on MERS in Korea (17 June 2015)
........WHO did not recommend the application of any travel or trade restrictionsand it considers screening at points of entry to be unnecessary at this time, for the following reasons.
........First, after the outbreak was detected, the Republic of Korea has strongly initiated actions to bring this outbreak under control, and the incidence of infection cases has been declinging. This includes use of multiple approaches to identify contacts and to ensure their appropriate quarantine and monitoring, as well as effective means to stop inappropriate travel of cases and contacts during the period of time when they are potentially infectious.
........Second, WHO commended the speed with which the Republic of Korea provided information about an infected traveller, enabling China to rapidly locate, isolate and provide care to the individual and place his contacts in quarantine.
........Third, available evidence on genetic sequencing did not identify any significant changes in the viruses obtained from cases in the Republic of Korea compared to viruses from the Middle East.
.......Fourth, there is no evidence of community transmission, and those who caught the virus have visited health facilities such as hospitals. ........
Slowing Down of the Spread of Infection
........Up to 23 June, the total number of infection of MERS is 175; Among them, 27 people died (15.4%). As mentioned in the above WTO statment, due to Korean government's strong actions, the spread of MERS seems to be slowed down, for the below reasons. 54 peoples among 175(30.9%) have already beenreleased from the hospitials, after completily treated.
........And the increase of the number of infected persons has been slowing; 3 on 17 June, 1 on 18 June, 0 on 19 June, and 3 on 20~23 June respectvely. In addition, the number of isolated persons based on the suspision of MERS infection has been declined to 2,805, while, up to now, 10,718 peoples have been already released from the isolation.
........The normal incubation period for the visrus is two weeks, and thus those infected persons can be discovered by the end of June. The Korean Government will keep its strong actions to control the spread of MERS, until it can completly overcome it.
Importance of Tourism between Korea and Thailand
........The number of Thai visitors to Korea increased 25% last year to 470 thousand, while that of Korean visitors to Thailand exceeded 1 million 4 years ago. In the first quarter of this year, Korean visitors increased 19%, ranking the 3rd in Thailand. The rapidly expanding people-to-people eschanges between the countries, without doubt, is a solid basis of the excellent relations between the two countries. That is the reason why we have to promote tourism without excessive fears based on mis-understanding or rumors. /END/
