ASEAN Young Writers Award
Echoes Powerful Voices of ASEAN Youth

........
........The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and the S.E.A. Write Organising Committee, in collaboration with Mahidol University's Faculty of Liberal Arts, have written a new chapter in the region's literary history today (December 14, 2015) when the new literary prize, ASEAN Young Writers Award - AYWA, was given to honour the new generation of literary talents. Altogether 18 most outstanding short stories, in English and in National Languages, have been chosen from 1,459 entries in the region-wide competition.
........The Award Ceremony for the young talents from ten ASEAN nations, taking place at Baan Phraya Noi, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Bangkok, was presided over by Mom Rajawongse Sukhumbhand Paribatra, Governor of Bangkok and Chairman of S.E.A. Write Organising Committee. Turning up en masse to witness the historical event were Mr Amorn Kitchawengkul, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, Mrs Busakorn Kongudom, Chief of Staff to Governor of Bangkok, members of the Organising Committee, the Panel of Judges, S.E.A. Write Awardees, noted writers and the mass media corps. On hand to greet guests meanwhile were Ms Pranee Sattayaprakop, BMA's Director of Culture, Sports and Tourism in her capacity as chairperson of the AYWA Organising Committee, National Artist (Literary Arts) Chamaiporn Bangkombang, Chairperson of Judging Committee - Thai Language; Assoc Prof Surapeepan Chatraporn, Chairperson of Judging Committee - English Language; and Ms Payom Valaiphatchra, ASEAN Anthem lyricist and Secretary General of the project.
........The AYWA was initiated with the objectives to encourage and instill into the young people the love of reading and writing. Being launched across the region last year, it served as a lasting tribute of the 35th anniversary of S.E.A. Write Award and the designation in the preceding year of "Bangkok: World Book Capital of 2013" by the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The award was fast accepted as an important regional arena for new writers to display their potentials and inspire the next.
........Prof Dr Edwin Thumboo, 1979 S.E.A. Write Awardee - Singapore's very first winner who now chairs the island republic's Chapter of the Judging Committee, highly praised this new effort. "The ASEAN Young Writers Award is a tremendous initiative. While it contributes directly to the engendering and promotion at the ASEAN-wide level, it also simultaneously offers challenging opportunities for nations to use the initiative to encourage fictional creativity."
........Being introduced at the dawn of the ASEAN Economic Community, the award has strived to forge a better understanding among people of ASEAN. Awards are then given in two categories: National Language and English. The award-winning short fictions in the "national language" category are "Berubahnya Aku" by Abdul Hadi bin Mohamed from Brunei Darussalam; "The Kingdom of Cricket" by Ma Chanpanha from Cambodia; "Jangan Tanya tentang Mereka yang Memotong Lidahku" by Faisal Oddang from Indonesia; "Make a Date with a New Lover" by Phonephiloun Kham-inxou from Lao PDR; "Di Hamparan Perada" by Mohamad Shamsul Amin bin Md Yusof from Malaysia; "Daily Ignorance" by Saw Yu Nwe from Myanmar; "Bisita" by Lenin Carlos Macaraig Mirasol from the Philippines; "Risalah Ikan Paus" by Muhammad Khairool Haque bin Abdul Kadir from Singapore; "Prakai Dok Mai Fai" by Woraphol Thawornwaranon from Thailand; and "C? ........These 18 written works with inspiring contents are considered to be the works of excellence in literary aesthetics and creativity. They have therefore been handpicked from the total of 1,459 entries ASEAN-wide by the panel of judges in the respective nations who are the region's literary experts.
.......
Ms Chamaiporn Bangkombang, National Artist in Literary Arts who chaired the Thai panel of judges, made fine comments on "Prakai Dok Mai Fai (The Fireworks)" that "[It] cleverly reflects the violence in the modern society through various human actions told in the well-balanced plot. Parts of the story are seen to have vividly described the inner self of the characters, building up to be a very powerful story with highly emotional language."

........Assoc Prof Surapeepan Chatraporn, a celebrated scholar from Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Arts and chairperson of the Judging Committee of English language category, has a lot to say about "Daliyah Everlasting", the winning short fiction from Thailand. "[This short story] is remarkable for its eloquent language, vivid descriptive passages, and natural flow of narration and poetic touches."
........Apart from the plaque of honour, all awardees are entitled to the prize money of 1,000 US dollars plus an opportunity to join other award-winning fellows in an Award Trip in Bangkok. Thai winners are meanwhile entitled to a visit to the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia. Moreover, a group of 30 Thai finalists had an opportunity to attend a Writers' Workshop in Bangkok with National Artists in Literary Arts and S.E.A. Write Awardees of Thailand.
........In the near future, all award-winning short stories will be published in the first ASEAN Young Writers publication to inspire new generations of writers to better express themselves and to promote reading and writing among the youngsters of ASEAN.
